    Mr Wonka rushed on down the corridor. THE NUT ROOM, it said on the next door they came to.<\/p>\n

    ‘All right, ‘ said Mr Wonka, ‘stop here for a moment and catch your breath, and take a peek through the glass panel of this door. But don\u02bct go in! Whatever you do, don\u02bct go into THE NUT ROOM! If you go in, you\u02bcll disturb the squirrels! ‘<\/p>\n

    Everyone crowded around the door. ‘Oh look, Grandpa, look! ‘ cried Charlie. ‘Squirrels! ‘ shouted Veruca Salt. ‘Crikey! ‘ said Mike Teavee.<\/p>\n

    It was an amazing sight. One hundred squirrels were seated upon high stools around a large table. On the table, there were mounds and mounds of walnuts, and the squirrels were all working away like mad, shelling the walnuts at a tremendous speed.<\/p>\n

    ‘These squirrels are specially trained for getting the nuts out of walnuts, ‘ Mr Wonka explained.<\/p>\n

    ‘Why use squirrels? ‘ Mike Teavee asked. ‘Why not use Oompa-Loompas? ‘<\/p>\n

    ‘Because, ‘ said Mr Wonka, ‘Oompa-Loompas can\u02bct get walnuts out of walnut shells in one piece. They always break them in two. Nobody except squirrels can get walnuts whole out of walnut shells every time. It is extremely difficult. But in my factory, I insist upon only whole walnuts. Therefore I have to have squirrels to do the job. Aren\u02bct they wonderful, the way they get those nuts out! And see how they first tap each walnut with their knuckles to be sure it\u02bcs not a bad one! If it\u02bcs bad, it makes a hollow sound, and they don\u02bct bother to open it. They just throw it down the rubbish chute. There! Look! Watch that squirrel nearest to us! I think he\u02bcs got a bad one now!<\/p>\n

    They watched the little squirrel as he tapped the walnut shell with his knuckles. He cocked his head to one side, listening intently, then suddenly he threw the nut over his shoulder into a large hole in the floor.<\/p>\n

    ‘Hey, Mummy! ‘ shouted Veruca Salt suddenly, ‘I\u02bcve decided I want a squirrel! Get me one of those squirrels! ‘<\/p>\n

    ‘Don\u02bct be silly, sweetheart, ‘ said Mrs Salt. ‘These all belong to Mr Wonka.’<\/p>\n

    ‘I don\u02bct care about that! ‘ shouted Veruca. ‘I want one. All I\u02bcve got at home is two dogs and four cats and six bunny rabbits and two parakeets and three canaries and a green parrot and a turtle and a bowl of goldfish and a cage of white mice and a silly old hamster! I want a squirrel! ‘<\/p>\n

    2. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (J. K. Rowling)<\/b><\/h3>\n

    Mr. Weasley was slumped in a kitchen chair with his glasses off and his eyes closed. He was a thin man, going bald, but the little hair he had was as red as any of his children\u02bcs. He was wearing long green robes, which were dusty and travel-worn.<\/p>\n

    \u00abWhat a night, \u00bb he mumbled, groping for the teapot as they all sat down around him. \u00abNine raids. Nine! And old Mundungus Fletcher tried to put a hex on me when I had my back turned\u2026\u00bb<\/p>\n

    \u00abJust Muggle-baiting, \u00bb sighed Mr. Weasley. \u00abSell them a key that keeps shrinking to nothing so they can never find it when they need it\u2026 Of course, it\u02bcs very hard to convict anyone because no Muggle would admit their key keeps shrinking\u2014they\u02bcll insist they just keep losing it. Bless them, they\u02bcll go to any lengths to ignore magic, even if it\u02bcs staring them in the face\u2026 But the things our lot have taken to enchanting, you wouldn\u02bct believe\u2014\u00bb<\/p>\n

    \u00abLIKE CARS, FOR INSTANCE?\u00bb<\/p>\n

    Mrs. Weasley had appeared, holding a long poker like a sword. Mr. Weasley\u02bcs eyes jerked open. He stared guiltily at his wife.<\/p>\n

    \u00abC-cars, Molly, dear?\u00bb<\/p>\n

    \u00abYes, Arthur, cars, \u00bb said Mrs. Weasley, her eyes flashing. \u00abImagine a wizard buying a rusty old car and telling his wife all he wanted to do with it was take it apart to see how it worked, while really he was enchanting it to make it fly.\u00bb<\/p>\n

    Mr. Weasley blinked.<\/p>\n

    \u00abWell, dear, I think you\u02bcll find that he would be quite within the law to do that, even if\u2014er\u2014he maybe would have done better to, um, tell his wife the truth\u2026 There\u02bcs a loophole in the law, you\u02bcll find\u2026 As long as he wasn\u02bct intending to fly the car, the fact that the car could fly wouldn\u02bct\u2014\u00bb<\/p>\n

    \u00abArthur Weasley, you made sure there was a loophole when you wrote that law!\u00bb shouted Mrs. Weasley. \u00abJust so you could carry on tinkering with all that Muggle rubbish in your shed! And for your information, Harry arrived this morning in the car you weren\u02bct intending to fly!\u00bb<\/p>\n

    \u00abHarry?\u00bb said Mr. Weasley blankly. \u00abHarry who?\u00bb<\/p>\n

    He looked around, saw Harry, and jumped.<\/p>\n

    \u00abIgnorance of the law is no excuse, \u00bb said the policeman sternly. Reaching under the counter, he produced a large card showing a selection of pictures.<\/p>\n

    \u00abI take it you are conversant with road signs.\u00bb<\/p>\n

    Paddington peered at the card. \u00abWe didn\u02bct have anything like that in Darkest Peru, \u00bb he said. \u00abBut there\u02bcs one near where I live.\u00bb<\/p>\n

    The policeman pointed at random to one of the pictures.\u00abWhat does that one show?\u00bb<\/p>\n

    \u00abA man trying to open an umbrella, \u00bb said<\/p>\n

    Paddington promptly. \u00abI expect it means it\u02bcs about to rain.\u00bb<\/p>\n

    \u00abIt\u02bcs meant to depict a man with a shovel, \u00bb said the policeman wearily.\u00abThat means there are road works ahead. If you ask me, you need to read your Highway Code again. Unless, of course\u2014\u00bb<\/p>\n

    \u00abYou\u02bcre quite right, \u00bb broke in Paddington, more than ever pleased he had come to the police station.\u00abI\u02bcve never read it.\u00bb<\/p>\n

    \u00abI think it\u02bcs high time I saw your driving license, \u00bb said the policeman.<\/p>\n

    \u00abI haven\u02bct got one of those either, \u00bb exclaimed Paddington excitedly.<\/p>\n
