my first Valentine
February 14th is St Valentine's Day. St. Valentine is the saint of people in love. On that day you can send a Valentine's card or a present to a person who you are in love with, or to somevone you admire. But traditionally you must never write your name on it. By the way, some British newspapers have a page for Valentine's Day messages on February 14th.
Needless to say, it is particularly young people who look forward to Valentine's day, hoping to receive many cards. Valentine's Day was really important at school. It didn't matter who thay were from, just how many you receives. It was a custom for each child in the class to send a Valentine to another child. For this purpose we made our own very cheap cards.
My first Valentine was unforgettable. It was a nice home-made card with a red paper rose and a poem inside.
''Rose are red, Violet are blue,
When I grow up, I want to marry you''.
I was seven and had a crush on a handsome boy in my class. I hoped it was from him and I excitedly checked the handwritings of all my classmates. But to my disappointment I discovered that it was from a boy whose nickname was 'Smelly' because his mother gave him meat and onion sandwiched for lunch. I told my best friend, who promptly told everybody else, and he got teased by everyone. I was a little bit ashamed and felt sorry for him. Since then I've got lots of Valentine's cards and I've always tried to keep secret about the author of them.
Aprils Fool Day
April 1st is April Fool's Day in Great Britain. They say that this very old tradition dates the Middle ages when the servants were masters for one day of the year. They gave orders to their masters, and their master had to obey. But now April's Fool Day is different.
Now the first day of April is a day when you can hoax friends of yours with jokes like sending them to the teacher's room to take something special, or telling them to dig a hole because the dog has died; when they come back and ask where is the dead dog you say.
''April fool'' and laugh at them.
Last year I fooled father by glue-ing a penny to the floor and saying ''Dad, you'vedropped a penny on the floor.'' He couldn't get it off the ground because it was stuck firm, then I shouted ''Yah, april Fool''.
At school serious work is practically forgotten as the children try to pin notice on one another's backs. The notices say things like 'Kick me' or I'm a fool'. Teachers have to be particularly careful or they too might find themselves walking around with a silly sigh on their backs.
The best joke I ever saw was in school when one of our girls brought another girl dressed as our new needlework mistress inot the form room. She was introduced to the mistress teaching us at that moment, and she was completely taken in. She even told us to stop laughing at the new mistress. Then we shouted ''April Fool'' to her and we all had a good laugh.
Halloween
On the night of Octomber 31st is halloween, ghosts and witches are free, and you can expect to meet them. A long time ago people were afraid and stayed at home on Halloween. But now in Britain it's a day for fun. There are always a lot of parties on that night. Some people wear masks, others dress as ghosts and witches. Everybody is happy. At the parties both adults and children have fun, they play different merry games. Here are some of them:
DUCK APPLE. A large bowl is filled with cold, somethimes soapy, water and a number of apples floated in it.
