ESLPod.com presents Deadly Letters by Sara Gatchitie, Episode 10. Hello, I’m
your host, Dr. Jeff McQuillan, coming to you from the Center for Educational
Development in beautiful Los Angeles, California.

PREVIEW:
In the previous episode, we learned that the dean’s former lover, Diana Marcelo,
had ended her affair with the dean and that she says that she wasn’t at the
university when he was killed.

In Episode 10, Uncle Jeff investigates Diana Marcelo’s husband, and he and
Derrick decide to return to the university to look again at the dean’s office. When
they get there, Derrick discovers someone he didn’t want to find there. Let’s get
started.

Chapter 10

Uncle Jeff and I talked over the interview in the car. We agreed that we
only had Diana Marcelo’s word that the affair was over. And she didn’t have an
alibi. There was no one who could say whether or not she was at home
yesterday afternoon. We also needed to find out if her husband was really out of
town.
Uncle Jeff dropped me at my friend Eddie’s apartment. I had promised a
long time ago that I would help him move. I would have much rather stayed with
Uncle Jeff to keep working on the case, but a promise is a promise. I couldn’t let
him down.
After moving furniture and boxes for four hours, I got home at 4:30,
exhausted and too tired to move. But I managed to take a quick shower. Then I
laid down on the couch. I only meant to rest for a few minutes, but when I
opened my eyes, it was already 7:15. Uncle Jeff still wasn’t home.
I decided not to wait for him to eat dinner. I heated up some leftovers
that were in the refrigerator and when I sat down to eat, I heard Uncle Jeff’s car
in the driveway.
“So, how was the move?” he asked when he walked through the front
door.
“I never knew that one person could have so much stuff. He had more
furniture and clothes than a family of five,” I said. “What have you been doing?”
“I did some checking on Emil Marcelo,” he said. “He works as a real
estate agent and sells high-priced office buildings. According to his secretary, he
was supposed to be in Denver. His wife was telling the truth.”
“He could have come back without telling anyone,” I said.
“Yes, but that’s something the police can check on easily, but that we’ll
have a hard time doing,” he said.
By this time, Uncle Jeff was heating up some food to eat, too. We didn’t
talk for about 10 minutes while we both concentrated on eating.
When he was done, Uncle Jeff said, “I made another stop this afternoon. I
went to see Clara. The police have released her and she’s back home. She
seems to be doing okay, not great, but better than yesterday.”
“Does she remember any more about what happened?” I asked.
“No, not at all,” he said. “But she gave me her keys to the psychology
department and to the dean’s office. I want to have a look around.”
“Tonight?” I asked.
“Tonight,” he said.
____________

At 9:30, we arrived at the university. Both Uncle Jeff and I were dressed
in dark clothes. Technically, we weren’t breaking in. We weren’t committing a
crime. We had Clara Dunn’s permission and her keys to enter the building. But
we didn’t have the police’s permission to go into the dean’s office. Uncle Jeff told
me that he didn’t want me to go into the dean’s office.
